From
time to time, folks ask me about my philosophy on carving. I am not sure what
they are truly looking for in that question but I can tell you that carving
for me is all about discovery and creation. Discovery in what lies within the
wood -- be it a carousel animal, human figure, whimsical character, or unique
abstract; and creation - getting my mind and the wood to link with my hands
and tools to bring forth that new life. Both are hard to do and there is no
set rule for which one comes first. My goal is to create beauty and enjoyment
through that combination of imagination, wood, hands and tools. And if I can
make a living doing it then I am truly blessed. This type of philosophy does
not lend itself too well to mass production figures nor craft table trinkets.
Every carving I do is one that is truly original and contains part of me in
time and energy. This philosophy means that I only carve those pieces where
I sense that outcome of beauty and enjoyment in the piece. It also means that
when you own one of my carvings, you will own something very special - to you
and to me. Life is too short to have it any other way.
